The Greatest Comeback In Sports History

As we reach month three without sports, reruns have been the life of my existence, with the Red Sox 2004 World Series run still at the top of my list and it’s finally here. So far, I’ve watched it as many times as humanly possible, yet here I am, still getting chills every single time. The goosebumps can only mean one thing, the Red Sox 2004 season was the best comeback in sports history.

In hindsight, there has been some amazing comebacks over the years. One of the most intriguing parts of all sports; watching an underdog rise up against everything thrown at them to achieve victory. It’s one of the most glorious things in the world. However, facing your biggest rival, down three-games in a seven-game series, and pulling the unimaginable comeback to break a 86-year curse is unlike anything ever seen.

The Red Sox did just that in the fall of 2004. Rising up to defeat the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, after losing the first three games of the seven-game series. With a strong regular season and led by manager Terry Francona, the Sox we’re able to creep up to three-games behind the Yankees for second-place in the AL East come playoffs. After a Wild Card win and with an easy sweep of the Anaheim Angels in the American League Division Series, the Red Sox moved on to face their nemesis in the ALCS.

The ALCS brought a whole different ballgame into perspective for the Red Sox, with the Yankees catching them by surprise the first three games. With the season on the line, game four became one of the most infamous games ever played, with the Sox down one run in the ninth-inning. Coined as “the breaking of the curse” the next four innings would be ground breaking in the Red Sox surreal history-making, championship run.

October 16, 2004. Bottom of the ninth. Yankees lead 4-3. Mariano Rivera walks Kevin Millar. Dave Roberts comes in as a pinch-runner for Millar. After a few checks to first base, Rivera releases the throw to the plate; at bat, Bill Mueller. On the release, Roberts takes the leap! The steal to second is safe! With Roberts in scoring position, Mueller hits a game-tying single that allows Roberts to score. This specific turn of events would eventually lead the Red Sox to win the game in the 12th, and rallying the Sox to win the next four straight, creating the greatest comeback ever in the history of sports.

With the momentum from the legendary ALCS , the Red Sox would win the World Series with ease, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series title since 1918. With the greatest rivalry of all time, can only come the greatest comeback of all time, leading to one of the richest moments in sports history.
